The tiny town of Bolinas, at the southern tip of Point Reyes National Seashore, and a short drive north of Muir Beach, is not on the way to anywhere. It hides on the other side of this lagoon, and it wants to be left alone.
We will visit quickly and go.
The familiar scent inside the general store brought a rush of memories from my college years in Santa Cruz. All natural food stores have the same smell.
The same hippie-goddess vibe also prevails.
I've only been to Bolinas once or twice before, but I know its contours well. After awhile, all of northern California's tiny coastal towns come to resemble one another.
Bolinas has a slightly sharper edge tho'.
Some people would say West Marin County drinks from the crazy cup. Others would say it takes all kinds.
Bolinas then:
Bolinas now:
Bolinas then:
Bolinas now:
Bolinas then...No--wait. This one is San Francisco, in 3 weeks:
Anyway.
In California, a "community meeting to discuss beach camping" is code language for "what are we going to do about the hobos living at the beach?"
Like this dude:
No doubt the matter will be taken up by musicians,
poets,
and spiritual mediums.
I wish them luck.
My friend Emma and I are just passing through.
We came here with one specific thing in mind:
to buy California wildflower seeds.

wow - what a lovely post! I've been to Bolinas just a few times as well, but don't remember any of this (too many years ago)! Love your descriptions, too - beach camping - too funny.
It's wonderful seeing all the shots of Bolinas. My in-laws have a house there, but it's been years since I've been there. It is a gem of a place.
Nice post Chuck. Thanks for the tour, it makes me want to see it for myself. Nice to know the beach is available for "camping" should the missus ever follow through with that threat to toss me out with the garbage.
You could make me love any city/town you photograph. Sigh.
Nice post Chuck- I've never been to Bolinas! I must add that to my list! What seeds did you get?
Looks very cosmic. I liked the then and now paintings and the wall paintings.
sweet photos, well done Chuck.
Had to laugh at the Keep Bolinas Naked... so much like the bumper stickers and posters here admonishing us to Keep Austin Weird.
Bolinas looks like a fun little place to visit - thanks for the tour, Chuck.

Aha, a surprise ending! Loved it and good for you and Emma! Wish there was a place like that for our area. The books looked promising too. I need a good wildflower book, mine is titled Wildflowers Of Houston.
LARNER'S!! You read my mind, Chuck! I've been gone - What did you get? The post was greatnn and right on..LOL.
What's wrong with camping prick?
