The California Trip, Part Four: Santa Barbara

We spent the first night of our trip in Santa Barbara. Guy found a nice hotel near the wharf.

IMG_8366

What's missing on the wharf?

IMG_8365

Do you see something missing?

IMG_8376

There's no railing! Yikes!

Santa Barbara has many of the same landscape plants as San Francisco.

IMG_8379

But I've never seen a 15 foot Strelitzia outside of Hawaii.

IMG_8378

And we don't use Solandra much in the landscape.

IMG_8381

I saw quite a bit of it just near our hotel; it was a little thrill for me--those flowers are a good six inches from base to apex. This plant grows vigorously in San Francisco; one is currently smothering a 60-foot-tall redwood tree in Golden Gate Park. Maybe that's why it's not used. But the gardeners here have brought it to heel and I feel inspired to try it someplace in my garden.

IMG_8361

Someone however is having a harder time getting Bougainvillea to climb a palm. Surely this must be California gardening's most common error--bougainvillea does not climb without adequate support.

IMG_8360

Better results from the trumpet vine.

IMG_8362

Gardeners here quickly become expert with this plant; it's everywhere.

We were just talking about San Francisco's farmer's market--how nice to stumble upon one here in Santa Barbara. Every Tuesday on State Street we're told.

Cymbidium orchids for sale

Alstromeria and sunflowers

IMG_8386

I bought blackberry spun honey for $6 (Not being a foodie, I have no idea what that is.)

IMG_8387

And some apricots.

IMG_8400

More jacarandas here.

IMG_8390

And live music.

IMG_8398

IMG_8399

This rat on a cat on a dog freakshow kind of grossed me out. They were on the news last night too. Apparently this attraction is gaining some notoriety. I feel certain people would not stand for this in San Francisco--police would issue a citation and Animal Care and Control would seize these animals. Whatever.

IMG_8401

We got drinks at O'Malleys and enjoyed the excellent people watching.

IMG_8406

I didn't quite have the nerve/balls to take pictures of everyone who walked by.

IMG_8407

You'll have to trust me that the parade was excellent.

IMG_8384

IMG_8395

We had dinner here and this was seriously the best Thai food I've ever had. Guy said it was as good as the best places in Seattle where there is a lot of Thai food to be had.

IMG_8418

I liked this wall hanging made of retired sunglasses.

IMG_8412

View from the hotel balcony.

IMG_8422

It seems America's first (and last?) Sambo's Restaurant opened in Santa Barbara. Who knew.

What a wonderful, beautiful place. Your vacation has been a real treat to experience through your photos and narrative. Since we are only going to the beach with the whole clan, fun, but not like what you are getting to do, keep us posted!

Nice pictures, but would you please stop comparing beautiful Santa Barbara to the Bay Area. There is absolutely no comparison to be made.

What a tour! Never saw the rat on a cat on a dog gig-too funny and weird and cute at the same time. Love the luscious food in the farmer’s market. I also have a young solandra vine-hasn’t flowered yet but certainly looking forward to it.

Thanks for the pics. If you should get as far south as San Diego, check out the Water Conservation Garden.org

It's a 5 acre demonstration garden for fire-safe and drought tolerant gardening, sponsored mostly by regional water agencies.

I'm in the veggie garden Tuesday mornings, and I'd love to give you a tour.
