Ruth Risdon Storer Garden, UC Davis

Here are some pictures from another garden we visited last week at UC Davis. This is the Ruth Risdon Storer Garden, "designed for year-round color with low water use and low maintenance" suitable for landscapes in California's warm Central Valley.

I got all excited by the gold foliage in the next to last photo. I enlarged the shot to read the lable only to experience the let down of reading "euonymus". I was hoping for something more exotic instead of one of our most notorious scale magnets.

The grey/green leaved purple/blue, pea flowered shrub looks most interesting. I am guessing the pink shrub is a lilac and a redbud in the garden too. How very east coast. Nice naturalistic feel though. My garden to be is bound to end up like that since there will be no major earth moving and wholesale slaughter of the existing natives.

Christopher, that's Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora)--the only one I've seen in California.

I was there in last fall and there was quite a bit in bloom then as well. Spring definitely seems to be much nicer though. I should be going to Davis this weekend coming up. I'll have to check it out.

We can assume you received ample inspiration from this garden. It is well designed with all the right factors in mind. I love the clasping hands looking stalk. Agave flower bud?

The UC Davis arboretum also has a nice website with maps of all their plant collections at the following link:

I love the intense passionate unfurling of that agave thingy - wow, what in the wide wide world of sports is that? Amazing. Great pictures and I love the soft light.

See - and, "Oh!" thus = Ceanothus!

The clasping unfurling thing is the flower stalk of Agave polycantha and the Sophora secundiflora is a cultivar called 'Silver Peso'.
The redbud is actually the Afgan species so not too back east although the lilac is Syringa patula a smaller leaved species.

Thanks for the great posting.

That's gorgeous! I've only been to Davis once. They have the best farmer's market I've ever been to. What a great farming/gardening scene.

Gorgeous. We have a cousin up in Davis. Love that deep blue Ceanothus...maybe a Concha? We have yet to make it up there, but now great reason to go check it out. Great pics btw. Matti
