Tropical Topics, Big Island Edition. Episode 1
Our first day on the Big Island, we drove Saddle Road from Kohala to Hilo. Saddle Road (Highway 200) cuts between two big volcanoes, Mauna Kea (13,796 ft) and Mauna Loa (13,680 ft.). We would have driven all the way up to the top of Mauna Kea to see the astronomical observatories there, but a recorded message told us the road was closed at 9000 feet due to ice and snow.
Instead, we stopped lower down to enjoy the wildflowers and take some pictures.
As far as I know, this is all ranchland. The country road was all but deserted.
Coming Soon: Hilo, and the 4-mile scenic route to the amazing Hawaii Tropical Botanic Garden.
