Good news: I just learned the SF Botanical Garden is going to have an additional end-of-season plant sale in December, and it will be a 2-for-1 sale. So--very exciting.
Everything is blooming right now. This giant aster is Montanoa.
There are several of them in the Cloud Forest garden
And the flowers smell strongly of cupcakes.
Seriously--cupcakes.

Is fall in SF like spring elsewhere. It sure looks like it from those blooms. I am not sure I could have a plant that smelled of cupcakes, I think about food enough as it is.
What are the purple flowers after the series of Montanoa? oh, and by the way, you can grow SOME poppies from the central valley because we didn't ALL vote for Prop 8. ;>)
Weeder, I don't know...It's a salvia of some sort, surely. I was blazing through there today on a lunch break I didn't have time for, and I didn't see a sign through all the undergrowth. There are so many salvias in there.
Les, We do have a spring-like fall, but it's also very fall-like. Leaves are dropping, it's dark, it's getting cold.
I like the sound of an aster that smells of cupcakes, too bad it's such a tender annual.
Nice photos - a plant sale in December sounds so incredible.
Hi Chuck, that is a giant aster! It will look good with moonlight and abutilons. I love plant sales, you should clean up. I love the smell of cupcakes too. All the flowers look lovely.

Yum. The only thing better than a Cloud Forest Garden is surely a Cloud Forest Garden with plants that smell like cupcakes!
I hadn't even heard of Montanoa before. Cupcakes?! Sounds like a must-have.
What is the purple-flowering plant pictured after the Montanoa?
